About Reed Fencing

Norfolk Reed is the most durable material for thatching; a roof well thatched with it will last a lifetime. What is not so well known is that good-looking and long-lasting fencing has traditionally been made by hand in East Anglia using Norfolk Reed.
Norfolk Reed Fencing is environmentally friendly. Regularly cut reedbeds provide valuable habitats for numerous birds and mammals such as bittern, bearded tit, reed warbler, water vole and otter. Both reed and timber are from sustainable sources.
Norfolk Reed Fencing is good-looking as well as practical. The timber frame is robust without being clumsy, and the colour matches that of the reed. Timber and reed will mellow to make a sympathetic backdrop for garden plants and an effective screen to hide unsightly tanks or dustbins.
Unlike a solid fence, Norfolk Reed Fencing makes an efficient windbreak; withstanding strong wind by allowing a proportion to pass through.
Since the panels are identical on both sides, there is no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ side.
All the timber used is pressure-treated and will therefore need no further attention. The reed needs no treatment.
How long will it last?
Almost certainly longer than woven willow or hazel hurdles. The life-expectancy of Norfolk Reed Fencing varies from 10- 25 years depending on situation and climate. Although climbing plants may be grown against it, dense vegetation will shorten its’ life by lessening airflow. Conversely, wind will prolong its’ life by drying it more quickly.
